Ethereum
Ethereum is an open-source, decentralized platform for building and running smart contracts, and the cryptocurrency (ETH) native to that platform. It was launched in 2015 following work by Vitalik Buterin and a community of developers, and it underpins a large ecosystem of decentralized applications (dapps), decentralized finance (DeFi) protocols, and non-fungible tokens (NFTs). Ethereum is the second-largest cryptocurrency by market capitalization after Bitcoin. The network transitioned to a proof-of-stake consensus mechanism in 2022.
