Trump announces unilateral "energy ceasefire," Ukraine rejects framing, Russia keeps striking
On October 11, US President Donald Trump announced that an "energy ceasefire" between Ukraine and Russia had begun, claiming both sides had agreed to halt strikes on each other's oil refineries. Neither Kyiv nor Moscow formally confirmed the arrangement, and within hours Russian forces hit the TEC-5 thermal power plant in Kharkiv and struck the village of Pisochyn, killing three and injuring more than 20. Trump, citing an October 9 phone call with Vladimir Putin, also unveiled a deal to lift some US sanctions and import up to 3 million tons of Russian diesel fuel, prompting sharp criticism from President Volodymyr Zelensky.
