Chornobyl Nuclear Power Plant
The Chernobyl Nuclear Power Plant is a decommissioned nuclear station in Kyiv Oblast, Ukraine, near the town of Pripyat. It became the site of the world's worst civilian nuclear disaster when reactor No. 4 exploded on 26 April 1986, forcing the permanent closure of the plant and the evacuation of the surrounding area. The damaged reactor is now enclosed by a massive steel structure, the New Safe Confinement, completed in 2016 as part of an international effort led by the European Bank for Reconstruction and Development.
