Ukraine calls US-Russia diesel deal a betrayal as Trump pressures Kyiv and signals intent to escalate before winter
On October 9, US President Donald Trump announced a deal with Russian President Vladimir Putin to supply Russian diesel fuel to US and global markets, followed two days later by an "energy ceasefire" covering only oil refineries. The US Treasury issued a license permitting imports of Russian diesel, while Trump publicly urged Ukraine to choose a new leader and pressed Kyiv to stop strikes on Russian energy infrastructure. Minutes after the announcement, the Kremlin confirmed Putin would not currently negotiate with Ukraine, and Russia continued striking Ukrainian targets afterward.
