Azov Battalion
The Azov Battalion is a unit of Ukraine's National Guard, originally formed in 2014 as a volunteer battalion under the Ministry of Internal Affairs at the outset of the armed conflict in eastern Ukraine. It was later integrated into the National Guard and expanded into a brigade. The unit has taken part in combat operations against Russian forces, notably the defence of Mariupol in 2022. Its history and symbolism have long been the subject of international controversy.
