Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation

Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation (APEC) is an intergovernmental forum established in 1989 to promote economic integration, trade and cooperation across the Asia-Pacific region. It groups 21 member economies, including Australia, Canada, China, Japan, South Korea, Russia and the United States. Its highest-level decisions are taken at annual summits of member economy leaders, supported by ministerial meetings and working groups. The secretariat is based in Singapore. APEC works by consensus and non-binding commitments rather than treaties.
