Austrian authorities release Ukrainian journalists after identifying mistake in espionage case
Austrian authorities detained Ukrainian journalists Mykhailo Tkach and Yaroslav Bondarenko in Vienna on October 8, accusing them of espionage for Ukraine's military intelligence and other offenses. After confirming that the group was conducting an editorial assignment to locate former prosecutor general Ruslan Kravchenko, the authorities acknowledged an identification error, found no link between Bondarenko and military intelligence personnel, and released both journalists. The case has become entangled with the former prosecutor general's departure from Ukraine and an anti-corruption operation known as "Carthage."
