Institute for the Study of War
The American Institute for the Study of War (ISW) is a Washington, D.C.-based think tank that conducts research on armed conflict and publishes open-source analyses of contemporary wars, with a strong focus on Russia's invasion of Ukraine and developments in the Middle East. It was founded in 2007 by retired Lieutenant General James M. Dubik and military historian Kimberly Kagan, who has served as its president. ISW is best known for its daily assessments of the Russo-Ukrainian war, widely cited by Ukrainian and international media and policymakers.

Ukraine's General Staff reported 238 combat clashes across the front on 21 September 2026, the 1671st day of Russia's full-scale invasion. The Kostiantynivka and Pokrovsk directions saw the most intense fighting. Russian forces carried out 91 airstrikes with 295 guided bombs, deployed 10,237 kamikaze drones, and conducted 2,903 shellings of Ukrainian positions and settlements.
