Trump-Putin deal on Russian diesel fuels sharp public clash with Zelensky
On 9 October 2026, US President Donald Trump announced by phone with Russian President Vladimir Putin an agreement to supply between 300,000 and 3 million tons of Russian diesel fuel to American and world markets, accompanied by a US Treasury general license valid through 7 April 2027. Trump then publicly attacked Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky, saying it was "time for Ukraine to choose a new president" and accusing him of being able to end the war but choosing not to. Zelensky called the deal "weak" and a "gift to Putin" and said parallel US-Ukraine talks in Miami were cut short as a result, prompting criticism from European leaders and bipartisan US lawmakers who are moving to legislate against the arrangement.
