Merz makes unannounced Kyiv visit, announces €1.3bn aid package and 15 agreements with Ukraine
German Chancellor Friedrich Merz arrived in Kyiv on an unannounced visit on 4 October, meeting President Volodymyr Zelensky, announcing a new German support package worth more than €1.3 billion and overseeing the signing of 15 bilateral agreements valued at over €8.5 billion. The package includes about €1 billion in military aid and roughly €350 million for Ukraine's energy sector ahead of winter. Air-raid sirens sounded repeatedly during the day, and a Russian drone struck the Northern Bridge over the Dnipro River while the chancellor was in the city.
