Al-Qaeda

Al-Qaeda is a transnational Islamist militant organization founded by Osama bin Laden in 1988 during the Soviet–Afghan War. It carried out the September 11, 2001 attacks in the United States, which triggered the global war on terror led by the United States. The organization and its affiliates have conducted major attacks in multiple countries, including the 1998 bombings of US embassies in Kenya and Tanzania. Although bin Laden was killed in 2011, al-Qaeda continues to operate through regional branches such as al-Qaeda in the Arabian Peninsula and al-Qaeda in the Islamic Maghreb.
