Ukrainian churches appeal to Pope Leo XIV over humanitarian crisis in occupied Oleshky
The All-Ukrainian Council of Churches and Religious Organizations has appealed to Pope Leo XIV, the World Council of Churches, the World Evangelical Alliance, UN member states and the International Committee of the Red Cross to help prevent starvation in the Russian-occupied city of Oleshky in Kherson Oblast. According to the Council, more than 6,000 people, including around 200 children, remain in the city without sufficient food, drinking water, medicines, electricity or gas, with the last food deliveries recorded at the end of May 2026 and Russian forces blocking residents from leaving.
